Microsoft: Console shortages to last well in to next year
The shortage of next-gen consoles is likely to last well in to 2022 according to Microsoft’s Phil Spencer. He was speaking to The Wrap and explained it’s not just a shortages of microchips that is causing issues.
“When I think about, what does it mean to get the parts necessary to build a console today, and then get it to the markets where the demand is, there are multiple kind of pinch points in that process. And I think regretfully it’s going to be with us for months and months, definitely through the end of this calendar year and into the next calendar year,” said Phil.
“The thing that’s most disappointing is just the fan disappointment,” he added. “People really want this new generation of consoles – they’re good consoles, both from us and the other platform holders – and they want the new functionality. We’re working hard to bring them to market but it’s going to be a challenge that we’ll work through for quite a while.”
Both Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles are in short supply with the latter selling out in seconds as soon as new stock is released. Sony have already stated that PlayStation 5 consoles would be hard to find well in to 2022.
“I don’t think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand,” Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki said at a briefing in May this year.
That hasn’t stopped the PS5 becoming the fastest-selling PlayStation console ever in the UK, it reached the 1 million sales milestones 39 weeks after launch. That’s three weeks before the previous fastest selling PlayStation console, the PS4. The PS5 also broke the same record over in Japan.
