Elden Ring is wrapping development, new gameplay details emerge

Elden Ring is in the final stages of its development, the game’s producer has confirmed. FromSoftware’s Yasuhiro Kitao also shared new gameplay details in an interview with Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu.

First and foremost, Kitao confirmed that development on the dark fantasy title is coming along well albeit “quietly”. There has been little in way of raw gameplay footage and media previews for Soulsborne fans to pore over and pick away at. However, with Elden Ring due to launch in January 2022, we’re hoping to see a lot more of the game towards the end of the year.

So, what did Kitao reveal in his Famitsu interview? He described how FromSoftware is taking an “unusual” approach to world design, especially when compared to their earlier work on Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro. Elden Ring will feature a vast open world that can be explored on foot or horseback, delving into dungeons found scattered throughout this mysterious realm.

When the term “open world” gets mentioned, it’s hard not to picture games like Grand Theft Auto, Assassin’s Creed, or Far Cry, where maps are densely populated with icons, quest markers, and other activities. FromSoftware won’t be following their lead, believing that navigation and exploration should be a challenging part of the experience. Players will need to unearth map fragments and summon waypoints to help them get around, creating a sense of reward.

Of course, this wouldn’t be an Elden Ring interview without a discussion surrounding the game’s difficulty. Here’s what Kitao had to say:

We want players to feel a sense of accomplishment, and one of the ways to achieve this is to set a high difficulty level. One of the ways to achieve this is to set the difficulty to a high level, so there is a definite sense of accomplishment in this game.

He emphasises how players will be free to experiment in combat scenarios. Like past Soulsborne games there will obviously be a major emphasis on melee combat though we’ve also seen ranged weapons and magic spells in action. Stealth mechanics similar to those seen in Sekiro will be featured in Elden Ring, too.

Please note that the interview was translated by the Elden Ring subreddit and was not officially published in English.

The Elden Ring release date is currently scheduled for January 21, 2022. The game will available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
