New Gran Turismo 7 trailer is all about the PlayStation 5 and a “tangible” level of realism

The Gran Turismo 7 Behind The Scenes video series continues, as series creator Kazunori Yamauchi discusses the power of the PlayStation 5, the DualSense and how it combines for “a level of realism that’s kind of tangible.”

That tangible feel really comes from the DualSense controller more than anything, with Polyphony Digital looking to put their own spin on the haptic feedback and adaptive trigger use that we’ve seen in other racing games on PS5. In particular, he details recreating the feel of braking so that the resistance on the trigger disappears if you lock up, giving you an immediate understanding that you need to release and reapply the brakes.

Gran Turismo 7 will also leverage the power of the PlayStation 5 to incorporate ray tracing into the game for the first time, though this is only spoken of in relation to the Scapes photo mode. Scapes is a unique mode in that it allows you to combine real world photos taken by Polyphony with digital cars in an ultra-realistic fashion, thanks to the amount of light and world data that is captured in addition to the raw photo. Ray tracing will help take that to the next level.

Yamauchi has previously confirmed that ray tracing will not be used during regular racing – the priority here is to deliver 4K and 60fps as best as possible. Instead ray tracing will be used when you’re not actively racing, such as when you’re viewing cars in the garage, watching replays or in Scapes. Basically, whenever having 60fps doesn’t matter.

Gran Turismo 7 is coming out for PS5 and PS4 on 4th March 2022, in what was a surprise cross-generational release considering the manner of the game’s original announcement. The PS4 version obviously doesn’t support ray tracing or the DualSense controller, but it will be fascinating to see how close the experience comes in terms of graphics on the PS4 Pro, and when racing using a racing wheel peripheral. If you want to upgrade from PS4 to PS5, you’ll be able to pay the $10 difference to do so.
